Statement from Town Supervisor Candidate Eric Connolly on NYS Grant Outcome and the Future of the Zim Smith Trail Connection
BALLSTON, N.Y. — Today, Eric Connolly, independent candidate for Town Supervisor, issued a statement following the news that the town was not awarded a $5 million grant from New York State for local infrastructure and trail development:
"While it is disappointing that our town was not selected for this round of New York State grant funding, this outcome is a setback, not the end of the road. Securing competitive state grants often requires municipalities to apply multiple times, refining and strengthening their proposal with each cycle.
This grant was intended to fund a critical link: connecting the Veterans Bike Trail in Ballston Lake directly to the more expansive Saratoga County Zim Smith Trail. Ballston’s connection remains an essential key hub as the County actively looks to expand its overall trail network and connectivity across the region.
A key factor in this initial round was that we did not have National Grid's full support due to major infrastructure work planned along their easement in 2027. However, I am confident that as I work directly to secure National Grid's full backing and align our timelines, our future application will be significantly stronger and far more competitive.
A central priority of my campaign remains making this connection a reality—expanding outdoor recreation, improving safe connectivity, and boosting quality of life for our residents.
Unfortunately, my opponent, John Antoski, does not share this vision. His voting record clearly demonstrates a pattern of opposing the Zim Smith Trail connection, turning his back on an initiative that would bring immense benefit to our town.
The fight to connect the Veterans Bike Trail to the Zim Smith Trail will continue full force should I be elected Supervisor. I look forward to working collaboratively with state officials, County leaders, utility partners, and community members to make this terrific asset a reality for our town."
